Modern football is decided in moments: a forward exploding behind the defence, a full-back recovering or a midfielder accelerating when possession changes.

The World Cup shows how much elite performance depends on acceleration, high-speed running and repeated intense efforts. As players return to their clubs, pre-season soccer speed training should prepare them for those demands.

But speed training should not begin with the same session for every player. One may be slow over the first five metres. Another may start quickly but stop building speed too early. A third may sprint well once, then lose speed across repeated efforts.

Start with a Simple Sprint Test

A 20-metre sprint reveals more when it is divided into shorter sections. Useful measures include:

  • 0–5 m, 0–10 m and 0–20 m times
  • The highest speed reached
  • How speed develops during the run
  • How much performance drops across repeated sprints

Two players can record the same 20-metre time and still require different training:

Slow over 0–5 m: use short resisted starts for actions such as pressing or reacting to a loose ball.
Fast start, little gain after 10 m: use longer accelerations for overlaps, counterattacks or runs behind the defence.
Strong first sprint, slower later efforts: train repeated sprint ability for repeated pressing and defensive recovery.

A striker may need a more explosive first step, while a winger or full-back may need to build speed over a longer distance. Players involved in frequent transitions may need greater repeated sprint ability.

Adjust Resistance Through the Sprint

The first steps require force to overcome inertia. As speed increases, quick contacts, stable posture and smooth rhythm become more important. T-APEX allows coaches to adjust resistance across the run:

  • 0–5 m: Greater resistance to challenge the start
  • 5–15 m: Reduce resistance as speed builds
  • 15–25 m: Use light resistance to preserve speed and rhythm

The load should be individualized. If the athlete loses posture, overreaches with the foot or appears to fight the resistance, reduce it. Effective acceleration training should challenge the player without distorting natural sprint mechanics.

Three Practical Pre-Season Sessions

1. First-Step Acceleration

Goal: Improve the first 5–10 metres.

Work: Perform 4–6 resisted sprints over 10–15 m, followed by 2–3 free sprints. Vary the starting position when appropriate.

Watch: Is the first five metres faster without losing posture or rhythm?

2. Building Higher Speed

Goal: Help the player continue accelerating.

Work: Perform 3–5 runs over 25–35 m, using more resistance early and less as speed increases. Allow generous recovery.

Watch: Does the athlete continue gaining speed after 10 m while staying relaxed and coordinated?

3. Repeated Sprint Quality

Goal: Maintain performance across several high-intensity efforts.

Work: Complete 2 sets of 3–4 sprints over 15–20 m. Use short recovery between runs and longer recovery between sets.

Watch: Does the player lose the start, the highest speed or the entire sprint? That answer should guide the next session.

This is especially relevant to wide players who sprint forward, recover and accelerate again, and forwards leading repeated presses.

Use Assistance with Control

Assisted sprinting can expose experienced athletes to slightly higher speeds. Begin with minimal assistance and increase it only while posture and rhythm remain stable. T-APEX can introduce assistance gradually and target a specific phase. Assisted work should complement—not replace—resisted acceleration, free sprinting and football practice.

Test Again and Adjust

Repeat the same sprint test at the end of the training block. Check whether the player:

  • Starts faster
  • Continues accelerating for longer
  • Reaches a higher speed with control
  • Shows less drop-off across repeated efforts

If the targeted measure improves, progress gradually. If not, review the resistance, volume, recovery and training focus.

Good soccer performance training is not about making every sprint harder. It is about giving each player the right challenge and a clear reason for every run.
